Protected bikeways in downtown

Fort Worth has a fantastic cycling culture. When going on the trails or to the Near Southside there is no lack of cyclists, but it really stops at downtown. While the city is doing a heck of a lot more than others (aka Dallas) for cycling, we should take it a step further. People don't ride their bikes downtown because it's scary to do so. Sharing the road with cars makes many people nervous and rightfully so, you're competing with people driving 2000 pound hunks of steel who often are doing other things like changing the radio or talking on the cell phone. To get more people to bring their bikes downtown you have to eliminate the risk and make it easier. The most effective way to do this is with protected bikeways. Putting a barrier between cars and cyclists not only decreases risk, it allows for innovation in the barrier construction which can be used for trees, green space or city art pieces.
