I LOVE main street arts festival. It is a highlight of the year for me and I do spend money down there. However, it seems that accessible and visible art lives in the downtown area mostly during this epic event. Yes, we have some great galleries but I like art that gets in your way, it seeks you out, and catches you by surprise.

So, how about we make downtown an art gallery!

At various points in the area you could make space available for local artists. For instance, on the side of a building you could install a secure frame where a painting could be hung. Its a metal framed box that is lit and has a glass door (obviously unbreakable) and is secure. They could be of various sizes. There could be an area where sculpture could be installed.

There would obviously be a process. People have to apply. Their art has to "fit" in one of the areas. Make 10-15 of these areas available. change out the art monthly.

While it might be a small group that would specifically go to look at these installations, I think this kind of effort could have an impact on "joe citizen" by visually breaking up the space with color and shapes while also providing a little "wake up - snap out of the grind" for others.
